On 25 May 2018, a new European Union (EU) privacy regulation will come into effect with wide-reaching implications for organizations in Australia and New Zealand that offer goods and services to people in the EU, or collect and analyze data tied to EU residents.
This regulation, called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), sets a new global bar for privacy rights, security and compliance. It enhances individual privacy rights and imposes new requirements on the collection, storage and use of personal information. Among other things, it details how organizations must:
- Identify and secure personal data in their systems
- Be open and transparent about their data usage
- Detect and report personal data breaches.
