Introduction
Robert Buktenica: Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the Late Night Brew, where we talk brews first, and then we get around to what we’re supposed to after the fact. I’m Robert Buktenica, also known as Buck, and joining with me today is Jonathan Hazelden. Jon, welcome.
Jonathan Hazelden: Thanks for having me.
Robert: On today’s episode, we’re going to be diving into security, why is it so damn important. However, first things first, what brew are you having with me today?
The Brew
Jonathan: I have a Angelo Poretti, it’s an Italian lager brewed in Northern Italy. I like it because it’s kind of full-flavored and really, really smooth. I’ve had it a few times in a bottle but also on draft which is actually even better, if you can find it, but it’s quite rare over here to find it in a pub.
Robert: Yeah, draft’s always better, that’s my opinion too. I’ve got a local brewery from Phoenix, Pale Ale called Herstory. The brewery itself is actually woman-owned so it’s very eccentric too. It’s a really good one. If you ever happen to make it this far over the pond, we’d recommend trying to get there.
Jonathan: Yeah, I’ve been over that way a few times but I don’t think it will be happening anytime soon, I have a young family.
Robert: I feel that.
Why is Cyber Security so important?
Robert: So, security, it feels silly to ask, however, it always bares repeating, why is cybersecurity so important?
Jonathan: I think everybody, lots of people have heard the term cyber security and cyber, because hand in hand with cybercrime, essentially, that’s why it exists. But really, cybersecurity is so important, especially these days, because we live in a digital age and so much of our information and data is online or in the Cloud.
Cybersecurity is more on, it’s more and more crucial. Essentially protecting things like sensitive information, that’s the big one.
Robert: Also your identity.
Jonathan: Yeah, ultimately. Your identity, personal information, financial details, anything like that for individuals but also for businesses, things like intellectual property, a big one. I’d say that’s the big one.
The next one’s is what puts fear into people is financial loss. That’s what a lot of people and businesses, and organisations are most afraid of. It’s that kind of– if we lose our data, what’s it going to cost us, want to get it back but also in lost revenue and reputation damage, et cetera.
What are some recent examples that illustrate the importance of Cyber Security?
Robert: Awesome, well not awesome but that’s a very good overview, and that’s a plethora, right? What are some recent examples that really illustrate this importance?
Jonathan: There’s a number, but one of the big ones in the UK, was Royal Mail, our postal service. The equivalent in America, the US postal service.
I think it was January this year, Royal Mail became victim, essentially, of cybercrime. It affected a lot of their services, and I think it was actually found out that it was a ransomware attack which disrupted their internal computer systems which was responsible for sending deliveries abroad.
That’s a really good example of something that has a financial impact to them because it’s disrupting their service, but also has consequences around reputation damage.
Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of customers, they could be potentially affected. But the reputation damage, when you have reputation damage, you start to lose trust or customers that we know start to lose trust in us.
Robert: Trust leads to– It’s only the mail service for an entire country, one or two people might have trust issues after the fact. That’s a fantastic example. Unfortunately, that does eat up our remainder of our time. Jonathan, it’s been awesome having you, thank you very much.
Jonathan: Not a problem.
Robert: Stay tuned for more as we dive into not so security, the defender suite on Microsoft side on how it can help. Contact information is below, please feel free to reach out. Until next time, buddy, take care. Cheers.
Jonathan: Cheers, thanks for having me.
