Eliminate Tape for Long Term Backup Retention

A significant number of NetBackup customers are currently looking to eliminate tape within their environments. For a long time people have been saying that tape is dead but until recently it was not cost effective as the amount of data you could store on an LTO tape and the performance of the drives made it cheaper than an average disk array.

A large number of NetBackup customers have already moved to the cloud or are considering moving, but most have concerns around long term retention and the costs associated with media management, as well as concerns around placing all their eggs in one basket or “cloud provider”. Removing tape all together has always proven to be difficult, often costly, and mostly time consuming.

With the introduction of deduplication technology, tape elimination started to become a reality but the cost to keep the data beyond a few months on deduplication disk pools was not cost effective at scale and meant that tape still had a place within the environment for long-term retention

With Veritas Access this is about to change as customers are now able to send their long term backups via S3 to a cost effective scale-out NAS solution. This effectively creates a two-tiered storage platform for the backup environment, with primary backups sent to high performance storage while leveraging advanced features such as client-side deduplication and Accelerator synthetic backups to reduce backup windows. Any backups that need to be kept for long-term retention would be automatically duplicated to Veritas Access via S3. This approach reduces the amount of primary storage required, eliminates tape, including all the operational costs associated with it and if using NetBackup Appliances or custom built Media Server Deduplication Pools (MSDP), provides a single vendor backup solution.

The integration of NetBackup and Veritas Access allows you to backup Access NAS file systems and also select Access shares as back-end target storage to leverage cost-effective, long-term data retention and remove the requirement for tape whilst:

  • Ensuring long-term data retention SLA’s can be met
  • Achieving a resilient, cost-effective long term retention solution that is scale-out and elastic
  • Eliminating the need for time consuming tape management
  • Providing a target for EV data classification and vault storage

We are happy to arrange a session to walk through these benefits and see how 360 Data Management can be adopted in a cost effective manner

Service Trust Portal – Part 2

By [Dan Snape]

In my last blog I provided some insights into the Microsoft Service Trust Portal and Compliance Manager. In this blog I want to dig a bit deeper into the Compliance Manager Assessments. As we know, Assessments apply to one of the Microsoft cloud services and either a standard (for example ISO-27001-2013) or a regulation (for example GDPR).
