The Data Management Journey

United States | The Data Management Journey

As your business grows, the data you store grows with it. It’s important to remember that information management is an ongoing journey. It’s about getting the right people to assess the kind of information stored, what it’s used for & why it’s important. It’s not about quick fixes that will achieve short term goals. The journey is long and you want to make sure you pack correctly.

The first key point on your journey is to acknowledge that data and information are not the same thing. Think about data as storage, replication, backup etc. and Information as the building blocks of your business. Remembering this distinction will help you on your journey and save you more money once you realise what you need to keep and what you don’t.

According to Gartner*, 68% of all data stored by companies has very little business, legal, or compliance value, i.e. unstructured data that is not relevant to run your business. This can include a wide array of files ranging from: data that has not been accessed over a significant period to duplicate data, Office files, personal music and photos; in short, anything not stored in a structured way, for example, in a database.

Working directly with customers and partners has shown Insentra that the percentage is actually higher. This has seen customers making undesirable and costly choices. They believed that as their data grew, they needed to throw more money into their storage platforms to accommodate it. Sorting out the information needed to comply with your legal and compliance requirements means you don’t have to back up and store everything.

Insentra can help you create a data management strategy to help you identify which information is relevant to your business, and which is a waste of space (literally). You can still accommodate for the growth of your business, but save yourself money on unnecessary storage upgrades.

Check out our next blog on how you can plan for proper information governance in order to keep storage and backup costs down.
