If your users are complaining about slow systems, slow application load times and applications that crash regularly, it would seem that you have a significant problem. But, how do you know if it really is your systems or just an excuse for your users to be less productive?
Slow system load times can impact not only your productivity but your profits. Here’s an example from a customer we recently worked with.
IT had an SLA in place with the business for a specific application in a virtual environment to load in less than 20 seconds upon the first launch. Upon review, it was revealed that it was taking 45 seconds – a loss of 25 seconds per user, per launch. The average employee at this business earns $100, 000. Therefore, every 25 seconds wasted waiting for the application to launch, was costing the organisation $350, 000 per year.
How did we work this out?
– $100, 000 x 1000 users = $100, 000, 000
– There are 234 working days’ x 8 hours = 1872 hours per year
– 3600 seconds (1 hour) x 1872 = 6, 739, 200
– $100, 000, 000 / 6, 739, 200 seconds = $14/sec
– 25 seconds x $14 x 1000 users = $350,000
And that’s just one application! Imagine the cost to your business if you had three, four or even five lagging applications? How did we identify and solve this issue?
We created a virtual workload to automatically replicate the behaviours of a typical user. This enabled us to monitor the load times. We then leveraged our Experience Monitoring Service (EMS) diagnostics to understand the root cause. In doing so, we were able to obtain a clear understanding of the environment and major issues and put in place a plan to reduce the load time of this (and other) applications. The result is an environment where this critical application now loads in less than 20 seconds.
