TRANSCRIPT

Introduction

Robert Buktenica: Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the Late Night Brew, where we talk to Bruce first and then we get around to the business at some point. Joining me once again, a very, very friendly colleague of mine, Hambik, welcome back to yet another episode.

Hambik Matvosian: Thank you for having me back again, Buck. It’s been a pleasure, mate, over the past few episodes of Late Night.

The BREW

Robert: Cheque better be in the mail. Tonight we are going to dive in directly to AvePoint PI and what it can do to help with OneDrive. However, first, Hambo, you know the drill. What brew are you having with me, buddy?

Hambik: I know the drill, so even though it’s beer o’clock summer in the world, it’s 10:00 AM here in Sydney, beer would be probably frowned upon. So, I’m sticking to my trusty liquid gold of coffee, so cheers.

Robert: Ethiopian, African.

Hambik: Ah, well, yeah, that’s a conversation for another day. That’s the rich beans I’ve got at home.

Robert: Three years at a coffee shop, I actually do know my coffee.

Hambik: Nice, nice.

Robert: As for me, yeah, fun fact. As for me, I’ve got a Simple Times Pilsner, which you can’t see because of the glare. However, it’s basically the store brand Pilsner, which is really freaking good. Trader Joe’s, it’s very, very drinkable.

Hambik: Nice.

Robert: Gotta love it when a store has something like that that you can just take advantage of.

Hambik: Absolutely.

What tools are natively available to help organisations secure manage OneDrive?

Robert: So, of course now, OneDrive, what tools are natively available to help organisations secure manage OneDrive?

Hambik: Yeah, look, there’s obviously the native tools available within M365. I mean, here in here in Sydney, in Australia, obviously there’s been a few major data breaches that have hit the front headlines over recent times, so security is definitely top of mind.

It is reporting natively through M365, so things, products like Purview, you can pull that reports to see what type of sensitive information is available. And then you can also pull out various other reports for SharePoint and also through OneDrive usage, just to see what’s being used, what’s being shared.

But the challenges that organisations face, you know, is it’s not just that single report. It’s multiple reports, trying to consolidate it all, trying to analyse it, and then eventually take action, depending on what the scenario is and what the issues are that needs to be resolved.

Unlocking Insights with AvePoint PI for OneDrive

Robert: Awesome, so that of course, is the perfect segue of how can PI enhance those, help us do it better, what visibility does it give, additionally, and all that good stuff.

Hambik: The one thing to really call out with PI is it already pulls in the data that M365 has already generated. It’s not another tool set to go in to increase traffic, to pull out a whole bunch of data calls into a separate platform, right? It already pulls in the report that M365 has, gives you that centralised dashboard, and gives organisations a insight into, you know, what’s been directly accessed.

Things like what documents have been shared directly with external users via external sharing links, via anonymous links, and gives you the total number of OneDrive for business libraries, which M365 does as well. However, PI goes deeper and gives you how do those OneDrive for business libraries, which ones have got anonymous links currently active, which ones have been shared with external users, to then give admins that ability to go in and start revoking permissions if they needed to.

Robert: All right.

Hambik: It also gives you a list of those libraries which are considered high risk, and the higher risk is based on what admins configure as part of the policies portion of PI, which stands the policies and insights.

So high risk could be, you know, again, external users could be you know what pieces of sensitive information types have been shared with external users, and you know, sensitive information type could be, you know, things like passport numbers.

Also, it also gives you, I guess, a top five type breakdown of sensitive information types that have been discovered and the total counts, for you to then be able to drill down at a more of a granular level to then identify which policies triggered them, which rules triggered them, and then start taking that action to start revoking those permissions, if obviously, there’s an exposure that’s been identified.

Robert: Wow

Hambik: That’s what it gives, that high level overview of how PI can really help, you know, from the OneDrive piece.

Robert: High level overview of the granular view, that’s what it gives.

Hambik: And the granular view.

Robert: Awesome. Well, that’s a great point to end on, and that does effectively wrap up our time for that. Hambik, as always, thank you very much my friend. It’s always great to have you on.

Hambik: Thank you, mate, always a pleasure to be on.

Robert: Definitely. If anybody has any questions, please feel free to reach out, all the contact info is below if you’d like to know more. Until next time, cheers buddy.
