Introduction

Robert Buktenica: Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of The Late Night Brew where we talk to the brews first and then get around to business at some point. With me once again next in the Intune series is Nick Thomas. As always, thank you buddy.

Nick Thomas: How you doing Buk?

The Brew

Robert: I’m doing good, I’m doing good. Hopefully you’re doing well and you definitely know the drill by now so what are you having with me today?

Nick: So I went to visit my brother at the weekend and he actually gifted me this lager it’s Hawkstone lager,  don’t know if you’ve heard of Jeremy Clarkson?

Robert: Yeah yeah yeah.

Nick: Top Gear. He’s a kind of farmer now and brews his own lager so just kind of crisp, light, nice, enjoyable kind of lager. Yeah, it’s really good.

Robert: Awesome. I’ve got a hazy IPA ‘Hazy Bones’. A little out of season as it were since it’s dios de la muertes (Day of the Dead) but hey what’s a little bit of celebration early.

What is device enrollment for Intune?

Robert: So on this episode what we’re gonna cover is device enrollment. Sorry there, what is device enrollment for Intune?

Nick: Well, to use mobile device management your devices need to be enrolled into Intune. Once a device is enrolled it’s issued an MDM certificate and that certificate is used between the Intune service and the device itself to communicate.

So there’s several methods to enroll devices and they’re kind of different depending on the type of device ownership, so whether it’s corporate or of course personal, and the management requirements.

What are some of the options for device enrollment?

Robert: Yeah. So let’s dive into that. What are some of the options for device enrollment?

Nick: Yeah okay, so you have I suppose the two, so corporate or personal, so you have using a self-enrollment and administrator-based enrollment.

The first one; your user self-enrollment is broken down into three methods. So you have BYOD (bring your own device), does your active directory join (where they’re enrolled directly into visual ad), and then you have something called ‘autopilot’ which we could talk about for a while so maybe to do an episode on autopilot I think.

Robert: Damn you got it.

Nick: And then you have administrator-based enrollment which consists of five different methods I think such as hybrid as your ad join. So you could have group policies in place that enroll your devices into Azure ad or using configuration manager with code management as well, so you’re kind of working in conjunction with Intune and configuration manager on-prem.

Robert: Extending the reach of your config manager as it were.

Nick: Exactly, yeah yeah.

Robert: Awesome, yeah and so that covers at least Windows quite nicely for the mobile devices.

What are the similarities and differences for mobile devices?

Robert: How is it similar and how is it different? (Like iOS, you know).

Nick: Yeah, so I suppose you can add your devices into Intune which you can then lock the devices down from that side of it. If your users are just using their own devices as well they’re kind of enrolled in a different way which would just use application management (which is a whole other topic).

Robert: I think we have that one.

Nick: That would give you (the IT admins) the ability to control either of those mobile devices as an entire device or just the applications depending on how they’re enrolled.

Robert: Yeah, wow, hey lots of options are good when it comes to user devices.

Nick: Yeah, there are many.

Robert: Yeah, yeah and we all know people can be a little picky about their devices and…

Nick: Yeah, sure.

Robert: You know, yeah.

Nick: Yeah, which is understandable.

Robert: Yeah, yeah. Unfortunately though that does wrap up our time today for the show. I hope everyone got something out of it if I could form a coherent thought. Until next time, please don’t be afraid to reach out and contact us with feedback. We’re always here listening nick until next episode cheers mate.
