What is Autopilot?

At a very high level, Windows Autopilot is a tool within Microsoft Endpoint Manager that can be used to deploy Windows PCs. It’s a set of technologies that enable IT administrators to fully automate the process of provisioning, configuring, and managing Windows devices. With Microsoft Autopilot, IT administrators can easily set up and pre-configure new devices for their organisation, streamlining the device deployment process and reducing the need for manual intervention.

How does it work?

Autopilot works by first enrolling devices in the Autopilot service. This is done by either uploading a list of device hardware hashes or by using the device’s hardware ID to register it with Autopilot. Once a device is enrolled, it can be automatically configured with the appropriate settings and apps, without the need for manual input.

When new devices are deployed, Windows Autopilot users the OEM-optimised version of Windows client. This is pre-installed on the device so there is no need for any custom images and the device can be shipped directly to the end user. The device can be transformed into a business-ready state. Once deployed, you can manage the Windows device using Microsoft Intune.

What are the advantages?

  1. One of the key advantages of Windows Autopilot is that it allows IT administrators to easily manage a large number of devices, without the need for manual configuration. This can significantly reduce the amount of time and effort required to deploy new devices, and can also improve the consistency and reliability of device configuration.
  1. Cost savings. With the ability to pre-configure devices and automate the setup process, Windows Autopilot reduces the need for additional hardware, such as imaging machines, which can save costs.
  1. Autopilot allows IT administrators to easily update device configurations over time, without needing to manually reconfigure each device. This can be particularly useful for ensuring that devices are always up to date with the latest security patches and software updates.
  1. Enhanced user experience: Users can experience a faster and smoother setup process with Windows Autopilot, reducing the need for them to spend time configuring their device themselves.
  1. Another advantage of Windows Autopilot is that it can be integrated with other Microsoft technologies, such as Azure Active Directory and Intune, for even greater flexibility and control over device management.
  1. Flexible deployment options. Windows Autopilot supports a variety of deployment scenarios, including out-of-box, hybrid, and in-place upgrade.

Conclusion
