How Microsoft Is Funding Your AI Journey with MCI and How to Unlock It

United Kingdom | How Microsoft Is Funding Your AI Journey with MCI and How to Unlock It

One of the biggest misconceptions about Microsoft AI adoption is that organisations must fund the entire journey themselves.

In reality, Microsoft invests millions of dollars each year to help customers successfully adopt its technologies. Through the Microsoft Commerce Incentives (MCI) programme, eligible organisations can access partner-led assessments, workshops, deployments, and adoption services that are partially or fully funded through Microsoft’s partner ecosystem.

Yet many organisations have never heard of MCI.

If you’re considering Microsoft 365 Copilot, AI agents, Microsoft 365 modernisation, or broader AI transformation, understanding how MCI works could significantly reduce the cost of getting started.

What is Microsoft Commerce Incentives?

Microsoft Commerce Incentives (MCI) is Microsoft’s global incentive programme for certified Microsoft Solutions Partners.

Rather than funding customers directly, Microsoft rewards qualified partners for helping organisations successfully adopt Microsoft technologies across key solution areas, including Modern Work, Security, Infrastructure, Business Applications, Data and AI, and Digital and App Innovation.

Partners can then use these incentive funds to deliver customer engagements that reduce, or in some cases eliminate, the upfront cost for eligible organisations.

That distinction is important.

MCI is not a customer grant programme.

It is a partner incentive programme that enables Microsoft-certified partners, such as Insentra, to deliver funded services that accelerate customer outcomes.

Why is Microsoft funding AI adoption?

Microsoft isn’t funding these engagements simply to increase licence sales.

Its own strategy reflects a broader objective.

As outlined in Microsoft’s FY27 Commercial Partner Incentives Guide, success is increasingly measured by customer adoption, active usage, business outcomes, and long-term value rather than software procurement alone.

Programmes such as the Microsoft 365 Copilot Deployment AcceleratorAgent Solution Deployment Accelerator, and the new Frontier Accelerate framework all reinforce the same message.

Microsoft wants organisations to:

  • Develop a clear AI strategy.
  • Build secure and well-governed environments.
  • Deploy AI confidently.
  • Drive employee adoption.
  • Demonstrate measurable business outcomes.

In other words, Microsoft is investing in successful AI transformation, not simply technology deployment.

What types of engagements can be funded?

One of the strengths of the MCI programme is that it supports organisations at different stages of their AI journey.

Copilot Readiness Assessments

For organisations evaluating Microsoft 365 Copilot, readiness assessments help determine whether the environment is prepared for enterprise AI.

These engagements typically review:

  • Microsoft 365 licensing
  • Identity and access management
  • Security posture
  • Data governance
  • Information protection
  • Compliance readiness
  • Technical prerequisites

Rather than jumping straight into deployment, organisations receive practical recommendations to prepare their environment for AI.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Deployment Accelerator

Once an organisation is ready to deploy Copilot, the Microsoft 365 Copilot Deployment Accelerator helps move beyond technical implementation.

Funding supports activities such as:

  • Deployment planning
  • Governance configuration
  • Security validation
  • User enablement
  • Change management
  • Adoption programmes
  • Success measurement

This reflects one of Microsoft’s biggest strategic shifts.

Success is no longer measured by licences purchased.

It is measured by active users who incorporate AI into their daily work.

Agent Solution Deployment Accelerator

Microsoft’s investment in the Agent Solution Deployment Accelerator signals where enterprise AI is heading next.

While Microsoft 365 Copilot improves individual productivity, AI agents automate business processes, orchestrate workflows, connect multiple systems, and perform operational tasks.

Eligible engagements may include:

  • AI strategy workshops
  • Agent discovery sessions
  • Scenario planning
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Governance design
  • Deployment planning
  • Custom AI agent development

For many organisations, this represents the next stage of AI maturity.

AI readiness starts before AI deployment

One of the most important themes throughout Microsoft’s FY27 strategy is that AI depends on strong operational foundations.

Through Frontier Accelerate for AI-Ready Productivity, Microsoft is investing in organisations that modernise their Microsoft environments before scaling AI.

Supporting programmes include:

ME3 Envisioning & POC

Designed for organisations adopting Microsoft 365 E3, these engagements help define:

  • AI readiness
  • Security improvements
  • Identity modernisation
  • Endpoint management
  • Business case development
  • Proof of concept planning
  • Solution design

Rather than rushing into AI deployment, organisations first establish the foundations needed for long-term success.

CSP ME3 Deployment Accelerator

Following the planning phase, the CSP ME3 Deployment Accelerator supports implementation activities such as:

  • Microsoft 365 deployment
  • Migration services
  • Governance
  • User adoption
  • Optimisation
  • Change management

Together, these programmes reinforce Microsoft’s belief that AI success begins with a secure, modern workplace.

AI readiness isn’t just for enterprise

Microsoft has also recognised that small and medium-sized organisations face many of the same challenges.

The Business Premium Deployment Accelerator helps eligible SMB customers deploy Microsoft 365 Business Premium while strengthening:

  • Security
  • Identity
  • Endpoint management
  • Collaboration
  • Governance

For growing businesses, these engagements provide a practical pathway towards AI readiness without the complexity often associated with enterprise transformation programmes.

Microsoft wants organisations to modernise

Another important element of FY27 is the introduction of Conversion Bonuses

These incentives encourage organisations to migrate from competing productivity platforms into Microsoft 365.

From Microsoft’s perspective, this makes sense.

AI delivers stronger outcomes when productivity, identity, collaboration, compliance, and security all exist within a single, connected ecosystem.

For customers, platform consolidation can simplify administration, improve governance, and provide richer data for AI services such as Microsoft 365 Copilot.

AI is expanding beyond Microsoft 365

Although Microsoft 365 Copilot receives much of the attention, Microsoft’s AI strategy extends well beyond workplace productivity.

Through Frontier Accelerate for Business Processes, Microsoft is investing in AI adoption across Dynamics 365, Power Platform, automation, and custom AI agents.

These engagements support modernisation across:

  • Dynamics 365 Sales
  • Customer Service
  • Finance
  • Supply Chain
  • Human Resources
  • Business Central
  • Commerce
  • Customer Insights
  • Project Operations

Success is measured through increases in Dynamics 365 Monthly Active Users, reinforcing a consistent message throughout Microsoft’s FY27 strategy.

Technology only delivers value when people use it.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility depends on both the customer and the delivery partner.

Generally, organisations must:

  • Work with a certified Microsoft Solutions Partner.
  • Meet Microsoft’s licensing and programme eligibility requirements.
  • Qualify for the specific engagement being delivered.

Requirements vary depending on the engagement type, organisation size, licensing model, and solution area.

A qualified Microsoft partner can determine which programmes are available and whether funding applies.

How the MCI process works

While the mechanics happen behind the scenes, the customer journey is relatively straightforward.

1. Eligibility assessment

A Microsoft Solutions Partner reviews your Microsoft environment, licensing, and business objectives to identify available funding opportunities.

2. Engagement selection

Together, you determine which Microsoft-funded engagement best aligns with your AI or modernisation goals.

3. Microsoft approval

Your partner submits the engagement through Microsoft’s MCI programme and obtains the necessary customer approvals.

4. Engagement delivery

The agreed workshops, assessments, deployments, or adoption activities are delivered by the partner.

5. Proof of engagement

The partner submits evidence that the engagement has been completed in accordance with Microsoft’s programme requirements.

6. Microsoft reimbursement

Once approved, Microsoft reimburses the partner through the MCI programme, reducing or eliminating the customer’s cost.

What this means for your organisation

The MCI program removes one of the most common barriers to AI adoption: the cost of getting started. For many organisations, the hesitation is not whether Copilot will add value – it is whether they can afford the consulting, training, and change management required to realise that value. MCI-funded engagements address that directly.

Whether you are at the evaluation stage and need a readiness assessment, or you have already deployed Copilot and are struggling with adoption, there is likely a funded engagement designed for exactly where you are. The key is working with a qualified partner who knows how to access these funds on your behalf and deliver an engagement that produces a clear outcome – not just a report.
