Introduction

Robert Buktenica: Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of The Late Night Brew where we talk to the brews first and we get around to the business at some point. I’m Robert Buktenica, also known as Buk, and tonight again with me is Nick Thomas where we’re continuing to discuss Intune. Nick, welcome back.

Nick Thomas: Hey Buk, how you doing?

Robert: Doing good, doing good.

Nick: Good.

Robert: Awesome. So you know the drill now that you’re a seasoned veteran. Spoiler alert we’re filming this on the same day so I know what he’s drinking already.

Don’t tell anyone I’m telling people secrets of the trade so we’re gonna jump right into the good content because I’m drinking the same thing too.

Does Intune provide device management?

Robert: Now Intune, what features does it provide for device management?

Nick: Okay, so if you’re familiar with group policy on-prem for device management then you probably kind of know what to expect with Intune. You can control devices such as restricting the use of a webcam for instance or enforcing a passcode on either a laptop or a mobile device, which are both great security features for securing your data.

You know, your phone might fall out of your pocket on the bus and you don’t have a passcode on either on the device itself or on your organisation apps then people can obviously access that data so it allows the IT admins to control your device without physically controlling it.

You can manage OS updates, you can have multiple policies for different user groups so you can have a test group that are running the latest version whereas you might have another group that are three months behind, and then you can have compliance policies.

For example, marking a device as non-compliance if they don’t have say encryption enabled on the device or tpm chip isn’t enabled in the bios on a laptop, that can then tie in with conditional access policies in Azure AD and restrict a device if it’s not compliant.

Or maybe it’s not compliant so the MFA policy kicks in and asks someone to re-authenticate from their from their mobile to gain access. So you know there’s quite a lot of similar settings from group policy that they’re now incorporating into Intune.

What features are available for application management and deployment?

Robert: Yeah, awesome so you touched on a little bit in the last episode, but what features are available for application management and deployment?

Nick: Yeah, so the app management side of things is where you can control the apps on your end user devices which may allow them to access company data but keeping it secure at the same time.

Robert: Kind of like a walled garden as it were.

Nick: I don’t know what you mean by that.

[Laughter]

Robert: Your data is protected or contained within a walled garden

Nick: Oh okay, yeah, exactly yeah. Sorry I thought you said wild. Language barrier there.

Robert: Sorry American English.

Nick: Exactly though, exactly. You know, everything’s in there protected unless you have the key to get through, you’re not.

You can create configuration policies for android and iOS which can give you the full app customisations such as language settings, security settings, company logos, you know as soon as somebody downloads an app and logs in and authenticates with their company credentials then those policies are all applied to that app and it doesn’t have any effect on their device itself.

Just touching further on the restrictions, you may have a policy, just an example, where you prevent a user from copying and pasting from a company app so they may be using outlook and “oh there’s something there I’ll copy that” and you can restrict them from copying it out of your company apps and into a personal or non-company app on their phone.

Yeah, you know that stops any deliberate or just innocent mistakes as well so any unintentional data egress yeah.

Robert: Awesome, wow. That’s a nice little touch base on the application side. Again, we’re going to continue to dive into Intune in further episodes so please stay tuned. We hope that you have enjoyed it so far and keep an eye out for the next episode where both Nick and I will probably be drinking something new because it’ll be a different day. Have a fantastic rest of your day Nick.

Cheers buddy.
