Robert Buktenica: Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Late Night Brew, special cardigan edition. Joining me tonight is my good friend and colleague, Alex Lugo. Alex, thank you very much for joining me, brother.
Alex Lugo: How are you doing, man?

Robert: Good, good, doing good. I’m here, about to have a brew about the launch of knowledge, how can we be going bad? Today, we’re going to be diving in a little bit to AvePoint PI (Policies & Insights), specifically around how it can help in Teams. However, we all know the drill. Alex, what brew are you having with me today?
Alex: Well, I have something nice and cheap. I have Sleeman Original. I don’t know if you can see that with the light.
Robert: We’ll get there.
Alex: Here we go.
Robert: It’s all good. Hey, classic, indoor, you can at least have a lot of them.
Alex: Right.
Robert: I will balance it out on I am pretentious and have what you call Fireside Chat. It’s a winter warmer. Of course my theme’s background is destroying it, there we go. It’s a winter ale, winter spiced ale, like this cardigan, cozy. Keeping a theme, right? It’s good, it’s one of my favorites, however, it is pricey, so you can’t have a lot of them.
What tools are natively available to help organisations secure manage Microsoft teams?
Robert: First off, for Teams and managing Microsoft Teams, what tools are available natively to help secure it?
Alex: Well, natively, that’s where the the opportunity comes with AvePoint PI. So natively, you have a lot of different tools and security portals within the Microsoft ecosystem, right? You have the Teams’ admin channel, you have the SharePoint admins channel, you have the compliance and security portal, and all these different areas have places that you can manage Teams.
A lot of times, these are settings that are tenant wide or you have to turn it on for everyone, right? So it’s not very granular. You do get a little bit more granularity when you use PowerShell, but again, there’s a lot of different places to go in order to achieve what you’re trying to do with securing your Teams’ ecosystem.
How PI Can Help You Secure Your Microsoft Ecosystem – Insights and Automation for Better Protection
Robert: Definitely, and we all know Microsoft loves changing stuff constantly, and it’s always growing, so you gotta keep on top of it. On that, of course, our perfect segue of how can PI enhance, do it better, help us out, help organisations out.
Alex: Well, great thing with AvePoint is that they use API’s, right? So, they have full access, if you will, into all the data streams from Microsoft, right? So they can grab all the information, the sensitive types of of data that are coming across. What AvePoint gives you is a single pane of glass, one portal where you can define.
They call them definitions, sensitivity definitions versus sensitivity labels, but you define all those labels. And what that portal does, is it illuminates where you have weaknesses. Where you have a lot of sharing of external links, anonymous links where you have external users that have access to sensitive information.
What it does, it illuminates that through insights that’s part of PI. So the insights is actually what goes out there and applies the sensitivity and looks at all the documents, and you can do that via silos, right? So you can do it for Teams and SharePoint. Since we’re talking about Teams, specifically, it’s looking as shadow users.
It’s looking at users that have access to SharePoint, the back end of SharePoint, but not not necessarily part of a team. So it’s going to show you all that information in one single portal, versus you having to go to a whole bunch of other portals. Now, the second part of that is policies, right?
So once you have the insight into where your weaknesses are, you can then have auto remediation of sensitive data, removing anonymous links, removing external users from Teams and SharePoint sites that they don’t need to be a part of. That’s the value that you get with that.
Robert: Yeah, and who doesn’t love automation? It takes care of itself.
Alex: Yes, absolutely does. The other good thing about it is, is that you can do more than just the Teams insights, right? It’s gonna give you the whole holistic approach across your entire ecosystem, not just Teams, but that is definitely a part of it.
