So, we now love the OneDrive client.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We love\u00a0<\/span>how\u00a0<\/span>it enables us to access SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive libraries from within Windows apps and work with files in Explorer.\u00a0 And we really love the way we can now link OneDrive with existing Teams and SharePoint Libraries and work with them without syncing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The OneDrive client for Windows has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years and now\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>is good \u2013 it wasn\u2019t always good \u2013 the Groove sync engine was a disaster \u2013 but the \u201cNext Gen\u201d (current) implementation is getting the job done.<\/span><\/p>\n

CUTTING TO THE CHASE <\/span><\/h3>\n

W<\/span>hat if you want to use OneDrive with SharePoint on-premises<\/span>?<\/span>\u00a0 Good news: SharePoint 2019 works with the current OneDrive clients. Bad news: earlier versions do not. But let\u2019s stay positive<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, for the sake of this discussion,\u00a0<\/span>you are<\/span>\u00a0using OneDrive for Business with Microsoft 365, your identities are\u00a0<\/span>synced,<\/span>\u00a0and all is well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>However, t<\/span>here is<\/span>\u00a0a nagging concern in your mind that one of your colleagues could connect their corporate PC with another OneDrive account from another organisation and accidentally move a bundle of your precious files away to another company.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>While it is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>probably accidental<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>this kind of data leakage happens, and your Cyber risk radar is beeping so you want to fix it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily,\u00a0<\/span>there is<\/span>\u00a0a control for\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>.\u00a0 The policy \u201c<\/span>Allow syncing OneDrive accounts for only specific organi<\/span>s<\/span>ations<\/span><\/a>\u201d enables you to configure OneDrive so it will only sync with the Microsoft 365 tenant(s)\u00a0<\/span>which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>you allow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Great. Now, what happens if you\u2019ve also\u00a0<\/span>you have<\/span>\u00a0got SharePoint 2019 in your environment and you<\/span>\u00a0woul<\/span>d like to sync th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0too?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Go<\/span>\u00a0to SharePoint on-premises, find your library, click Sync and\u2026 you get an error.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DO YOU SEE THE CATCH?<\/h3>\n

The configuration policy requires a Tenant ID from your Microsoft 365 tenant. SharePoint 2019 on-premises does not have a Tenant ID – so what can you do?<\/span><\/p>\n

It turns out OneDrive marks the on-premises SharePoint configuration with the tenant ID \u201cOP1\u201d.\u00a0 You can see it in the registry in Windows by looking into the OneDrive account settings under HKCU.<\/span><\/p>\n

BRINGING IT HOME<\/h3>\n

Adding \u201cOP1\u201d to your AllowTenantList policy alongside your Microsoft 365 tenant ID, will allow your OneDrive client to sync with SharePoint 2019 on-premises.<\/span><\/p>\n
