It starts with a single step: my journey of 1,000 miles

Firstly, a confession. Well actually, three confessions if I may:

  • My journey will be more like 1,600km, but that’s pretty close to 1,000 miles
  • It won’t just be mine, but a combination of efforts from a great group of people
  • And it’s an emotional journey as much as a physical one

My bright little 4yo boy Toby has cerebral palsy. He’s perfectly happy – active, intelligent, as cheeky as any other child – however faces daily physical challenges around walking, talking, feeding and dressing himself etc. Ever since he was diagnosed (at 9mths), we have been supported by the amazing people of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. They provide guidance, facilities, funding, education and assistance to kids (and adults) like Toby all across Australia. They line-up physios, help with parent-training, provide an outlet and perhaps most importantly, help arrange funding for things like walkers – check-out Toby in his.

To support these initiatives, I’ve signed-up to do Steptember and my journey will be to smash-out out 17,857 steps per day, for 28 days from Sept 4th to Oct 1st. That’ll be a total of roughly 400km or the equivalent of walking from Sydney to Kempsey on the NSW mid-north coast. Joining me in Team Toby 2017 will be my sister, niece and cousin and if we hit our goals, we’d have racked-up a combined 2 million steps AND hopefully raised over $10,000 for the CPA.

My emotional journey will be much harder and in this I’m grateful to work for a company like #insentra, that provides such a positive environment and truly cares deeply about kids in need. Supporting Toby’s daily requirements can take its toll, with all sorts of appointments with various therapists and from day 1, Insentra has had my back. From a very personal point of view, it’s this acceptance that people need to bring their full selves to work that makes it no surprise Insentra is ranked as one of the top places to work in Australia.

I would be delighted to receive your support as I complete this challenge – whether it’s an encouraging word, a helpful suggestion on tips for how to keep walking when you’ve already got a sore butt, or possibly a donation to our team, details here: https://stept.io/NVKGEib

Thanks and I appreciate you helping kids like Toby be all they can be.
